BNSF Railway's busy mainline between the Twin Cities and the Pacific crosses the Mississippi River on this bridge, which also is used by Amtrak's Empire Builder. Originally this site had a Northern Pacific Railroad bridge, constructed during 1877. It was replaced by Burlington Northern with the current structure in 1990.

Amtrak's Empire Builder passenger train crosses the Mississippi River daily on this bridge as it travels between Chicago and the west coast. The Empire Builder also crosses the river at Hastings and La Crosse.
