The radio navigation range at Caton Island, otherwise known as the Sanak radio range due to its location in the Sanak archipelago 100 miles southwest of Sand Point, was commissioned in January 1943. This remote station was operated by 10 Navy enlisted men under the command of one officer. The radio range, antenna tower array, radar beacon, weather observation, an support facilities were distributed among two areas connected by a road and power transmission line. The tower array and wooden structures that housed personnel and equipment were located in a high-wind area on the crest of a hill. With the identifier “NKK,” the range broadcast continuous weather information and radio beams with bearings toward the station at 37°, 130°, 223°, and 310°. The range was decommissioned and abandoned at the end of the war.
