The Moscow Zoo was founded by professor-biologists of the Moscow State University, K.F. Rulje, S.A. Usov and A.P. Bogdanov. Nationalized in 1919, the ownership was transferred to the city of Moscow in 1922.The zoo had an area of 10 hectares when it was first opened, with 286 animals and was expanded in 1926 to 18 hectares. Originally, the zoo had wooden buildings.

The zoo was renovated in 1990 with additions of a new large rock castle shaped main entrance and a footbridge. In the second phase of expansion, new exhibits of a sea aquarium, an aviary, a creatures of the night exhibit, a sea lion exhibit and a section aimed at children were added. Waterfalls and streams were added throughout to give the zoo a more natural feeling.

Presently, the Moscow zoo has over 6000 animals representing more than 1000 species and covers an area of about 21.5 hectares. The zoo studies animals behaviour, feeding and reproduction, and breeds rare endangered species.
