The site has an area of approximately 65 hectares, and has been used as a major Defence ammunition storage facility from 1912 to the early 1950's, with the Army being the prominent user in that time. Both the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force stored explosives at the facility during World War II.
Since 2004, part of the site has been occupied by BAE Systems to provide logistical support for Defence.
