Whitestone Pond (London)

United Kingdom / England / London

Whitestone Pond is situated at the highest point in North London, 440ft above the sea level. It takes its name from white milestone, which once stood in the middle of the road.(Now it lies among the bushes to the side). The horse-drawn vehicles used to drive right
through the pond (using ramps at either end of the pond). It was known as Horse Pond, since it offered refreshment for animals. It began as a small dew pond, but was enlarged and by 1890 artificially supplied with water.
