Neahkahnie Mountain, 1634 feet (498 m) in elevation. At the north end of Tillamook County, this mountain is part of a series of headlands that jut about a mile into the ocean. The mountain is actually a volcanic lava flow from eastern Oregon that filled a deep valley 50,000,000 years ago. Over time the softer sedimentary rock of the valley eroded away leaving the basalt of the mountain exposed.
In this region you'll notice that many place names begin with Ne. This is said to translate as "the place of". Thus NeahKahNie translates from the local Chinookan dialect as "The Place of the Gods"
The mountain summit is an easy hike along the Pacific Coast Trail. The view at the summit is superb.
(The outline is traced at the 1400 foot level.)
