 office building  Add category

12-story office building completed in 1915. Designed by Herman L. Meader, it is roughly U-shaped, with two wings extending through to West 32nd Street. The long 33rd Street facade spans 11 bays, while the wing at 5 West 32nd has three bays, and the one at 15 West 32nd has three narrower, single-window bays.

The ground floor on 33rd Street has stone piers over a black granite water table, with a dentiled band course across the top. The bays have metal-and-glass storefronts with recessed entrances. The main building entrance is in the center bay, framed in polished black granite that splits the band course. The 2nd-3rd floors have 2-story black metal pilasters between the windows and small stone spandrels between the floors. At the 3rd floor, the tops of the end piers have carved winged angel figures. The base is capped by an ornate stone cornice with a wave motif, rosettes alternating with metopes, and an egg-and-dart molding. The transitional 4th floor is also clad in light-colored stone, and topped by a band course with intermittent Greek-fret patterns. Each bay has three windows, and the main piers are ornamented by stone circles overlaying three carved vertical elements.

The upper floors are clad in buff-colored brick, with paired windows in each bay. A string course sets off the top floor, which has simple brick panels on the piers. A simple stone coping caps the roof line.

The facade at 5 West 32nd is very similar to that on 33rd Street. It has varied modernized storefronts at the ground floor, and large paired windows at the 2nd floor, divided by slender columns, but the cornice capping the base matches that on 33rd Street - here, however, that base is only two stories. The 3rd floor is the transitional floor, with the same decoration on the piers and the same cornice as on 33rd Street. The three bays of paired windows on the brick upper floors also match. Above the string course setting off the top floor are seven evenly-spaced windows, topped by a bracketed roof cornice. The ground floor here is occupied by BCD Tofu House, and Pinkberry frozen yogurt.

The narrow facade at 15 West 32nd also has a 2-story base, but with a modernized 2nd floor, featuring a large tripartite window in silver metal; the transoms above reveal the original slender columns between each pane. The cornices above the base and transitional floor match those on the other facades. The 3rd floor has three windows, with small cartouches on the end piers - the outer edges of the floor are brick, matching the upper floors, which each have three windows. The top of this facade is the same as on 33rd Street, with a string course below the top floor, and a simple stone coping at the roof line. The ground floor here is occupied by Tea Makers, and Pocha 32 cafe.

The ground floor on 33rd Street is occupied by Sol Spa, Dunkin' Donuts, Naya Grill, and Legends NYC bar & grill. The penthouse was reportedly the office and dining room of John Jacob Astor, IV.
