The hill east of Mayachnoe, which features a brick factory and a quarry, served as part of the settlement and necropolis of the medieval town located at Krasnyy Yar across the stream to the south (that part of the archaeological site has been obliterated by modern construction). The latter has been identified as (old) Saray (which does not seem to correspond to Selitrennoe, as almost universally assumed), and existed in the 13th and early 14th century. After a period of abandonment, possibly caused by flooding, the site was apparently repopulated under its possible pre-Mongol name Kandak (Khandakh, Qandaq).
