I believe demonstrators camped out on these islands in the late 60's/early 70's to stop new bridge construction for I-66 (which was to be built in the area of what is now the Spout Run Parkway) and connected to the Whitehurst. Obviously, the bridge was never built and I-66's route was moved to go through Rosslyn.
