mansion / manor house / villa, tourist attraction, historic house
Syon house is one of the most lavish stately homes in the country, owned by the Dukes of Northumberland, and was built on the site of an enormous and equally lavish monastery.
Founded by Henry the Fifth, Syon Abbey, home to an obscure order of Swedish nuns, became one of the wealthiest and most powerful religious establishments in Medieval England. A hot bed of political intrigue and descent then, although it survived Henry the Eighth's dissolution shortly afterwards, the buildings just vanished. Time Team recently excavated the grounds to discover more about the former Abbey.
