| Wachovia Spectrum The Wachovia Spectrum is an 18,136-seat multi-purpose indoor arena in South Philadelphia. It opened on October 19, 1967 and is currently the oldest sporting arena in the south Philadelphia sports complex. It was also only the second sports arena to be built in the complex (the first being John F. Kennedy Stadium). Formerly known as the "Spectrum," "CoreStates Spectrum," and "First Union Spectrum," the building is locally referred to as merely the "Spectrum." The former home of the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers and NBA's Philadelphia 76ers, it is currently home to the Philadelphia Phantoms arena hockey (AHL), Philadelphia Kixx men's soccer (MISL), and Philadelphia Soul arena football (AFL) teams. Additionally, the Spectrum plays host to numerous events each year. Monster truck shows, ice shows, concerts, and Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus have all been featured throughout the building's history. In early 2008, premature plans to demolish the Spectrum to make way for a massive sporting, entertainment, and residential complex were discussed. As of March 2008, no further information came about on these plans.
