palace, ruins, prehistoric
The Royal Palace G of the mature Early Syrian period was probably founded around 2400 BC, and was destroyed, after a thorough pillage, after the conquest in the years around 2300 BC, quite likely by Sargon of Akkad, who in one inscription of his boasts about having in his hands Mari, Yarmuti, and Ebla.
The Palace stretched over a large part of Ebla Acropolis, and was a multifunction building with ceremonial, residential, administrative, handicraft, storage quarters, and, with its ramifications at the foot of the natural hillock probably made higher by previous settlements, also stretched into part of the Lower Town. During the last phase of the life of Early Syrian Ebla, the monumental Red Temple was built on the east edge of the Acropolis, which was certainly related with the palace, functioning as dynastic sanctuary.
The most relevant find in the Royal Palace G are the several cores of the exceptional State Archives of the Early Syrian town, with more than 17,000 inventory numbers, including complete tablets, large fragments and chips. These famous cuneiform texts are allowing to reconstruct not only the economy and society of the great north inner Syrian town in the mature Early Syrian period, but also aspects of history, religion and culture of a larger region, reaching to the Euphrates.
