The Embassy of Canada was designed by renowned Canadian architect Arthur Erickson (1924-2009). It was officially opened by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney in May 1989 and features a large bronze sculpture called "the Spirit of Haida Gwaii" by Canadian indigenous artist Bill Reid (1920-1998) from British Columbia.
Canada's Embassy in Washington, D.C. is the closest one to the US Capitol Building and the National Mall, symbolising the close relationship and proximity of the two countries. The embassy is Canada's largest foreign mission, with about 135 Canada-based staff and 150 locally-engaged employees.
The Embassy is responsible for Canadian interests in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia; and consular affairs only in Delaware. Trade and investment services in Delaware are covered by the Consulate General of Canada in New York. As of May 2020 the embassy supervises an Honorary Consul based in Richmond, VA.
