St Nicholas' Hospital in Gosforth, sometimes known as Newcastle upon Tyne City Asylum, was founded in 1864 and opened in 1869 according to local history books. The building is still in use as a mental hospital although it must have undergone many alterations as 3 different architects, William Lambie Moffatt, of Edinburgh (1864-9), Arthur Benjamin Plummer of Newcastle upon Tyne (1886-8) and James W. Dyson of Newcastle (1892-6), are mentioned in the early years.
