First campus library, built in 1930 and slowly expanded (Evans Library and an addition were built behind it). By the early 1990s, it was a cramped place: there were catwalks and ladders leading to theses no one was likely to read, offices, and a lounge. In 1994, the Cushing Memorial Library was closed for an extensive renovation and reopened in 1998. The 1998 restoration brought back architectural features covered up by later remodels, converted it into more of a museum, but closed off the connection from the rest of the Evans Library (though Evans Library gained the Annex in circa 1999). Today, it contains the university archives and rare books and manuscripts.
The place is located in Sterling J. Evans Library

  • This building once housed the famous library "stacks" section, a maze of laddres and catwalks housing student theses and other documents unlikely to ever see the light of day. Today, it has been remodelled, and now houses special collections.
