Famous industrial area of the city, once noted for its huge railway industries. Springburn was the centre of Glasgow’s locomotive production, with several huge factories huddled around the main lines that led into Queen Street and the now demolished Buchanan Street railway stations. The city’s post industrial decline hit Springburn hard, and being declared a Comprehensive Development Area in the wake of the Bruce Report did little to improve its fortunes. It was an all too familiar story - the area was stripped of its population and effectively bisected in two by the Kirkintilloch expressway. Those that remained found themselves stacked vertically in tower blocks and soulless estates to make room for cars. Like many other CDAs in the city - it was a planning disaster, and soon Springburn would join other North Glasgow areas in being a hotspot for drug abuse and poverty. Only one railway works remains in operation as a maintenance facility, the rest having been long demolished.
