“Spook Bridge” is the name given to the Howland Avenue bridge over the Van Saun Mill Brook. According to The United Churches of Hackensack and Schraalenburgh by Adrian C. Leiby (page 199), “A century after the Revolution, Jersey Dutch farmers told youngsters about the Spook Bridge that horses refused to cross, a haunted bridge in Sluckup where the bodies of Seventeen Continental soldiers were laid after they drank cider poisoned by a local Tory.” The known facts are as follows: Washington’s army was camped in the immediate area during the late summer of 1780, and some soldiers who succumbed to disease in camp were buried near the bridge.
