It deals in the retail business of clothing, shoes, accessories, etc. The brand goes back to 1967 when Marithé et François Girbaud meet at « Western House ». The are in the history of the jeans since 1970 when pre-washing of jeans becomes industrial. The brand becomes famous in 1982 when Jennifer Beals wears a Marithe+Francois Girbaud jeans in the moovie Flashdance.

Since 2003 the company invents a new laser process saving 97,5% water when pre-washing jeans. In 2005, the reinterpretation of a Leonardo da Vinci painting representing the last supper créates a scandal in France.
