Candi Badut is situated in Tidar area, the city of Malang. This temple is estimated more than 1400 years old and is believed to be relics of King Gajayana, ruler of the kingdom Kanjuruhan as embodied in the inscription Dinoyo 760 years BC.
The term Badut comes from the Sanskrit "BHA-dyut" which means the highlight of Canopus Stars or Agastya highlight. And this is shown in the parent room of the temple which contains a pair of statues in the form of Shiva and Parvati (phallus and yoni).
This temple was discovered in 1921 in form of mound of rock, rubble and soil by Maureen Brecher, a Dutch controller who work in Malang. Candi Badut was rebuilt in 1925-1927 under the supervision of B. De Haan from the Department of Antiquities of Dutch East Indies.
