Mindless development of number tanneries in the Walaja, resulted in finding a place in critically polluted area list declared by Ministry Environment and Forest, India. The sub-surface water flows towards the Bay of Bengal which passes through Kancheepuram and Walajabad. One of the source of drinking water to the Chennai Metropolitan Area. Tannery effluents contains Cr 6+ (hexavalentchromium)is a cancer causing chemical found the drinking water of Palar basin.
