Access shaft to Delaware Aqueduct (Bedford, NY)

This building is directly above the aqueduct, which is approximately 400 feet below the surface. It carries water from reservoirs in the Catskill mountains to Kensico Reservoir and beyond, to the city. Started before WW II and put into service in the early 1950s, it supplies more than half of the city's water today.
