Built by architect Dudley Newton in 1884 for Theodore Kane Gibbs on land previously owned by H. Sidney Everill.
"Although its gambrel roof is in keeping with its Neo-Colonial style, the low spread of this house is not, and the extensive use of irregularly set stone with brick trim on this two-and-one- half-story residence is unusual. At one end of the lower service wing, a tall brick arch opens for a drive running beneath the second story to the rear of the house. There, porches open to a vista of the property and down the hillside to Easton's Pond and the ocean. The brick trim allows for such decorative touches as the window corbeling at either side of the projecting entry bay and the small rough stone patches that poke through the flat plane of brick quoining at each corner. A ruddy palette overall—bricks, pink granite, red slate, even rust-colored grout—unifies the various materials." (SAHArchipedia)
