The "first genocide of the 20th century", as termed by Pope Francis, began exactly 100 years ago when the Ottoman Turks rounded up and executed several Armenians on their territory. Eventually, 1.5 million Armenians were killed during and after the World War I. On Friday, the Armenian community in Kolkata joined their compatriots around the world in commemorating the victims of the ethnic cleansing.

Members of the Armenian community in Kolkata, along with visitors from countries like Iran, Lebanon and Moscow, assembled at the Armenian Holy Church of Nazareth for a memorial service. "In memory of the martyrs, we express our gratitude to the nations, organizations and individuals who have had the courage and conviction to recognise and condemn the Armenian genocide.
