Jasper formerly had two schools due to the laws of segregation. The "Black" school was the J. R. E. Lee School. The "White" school was Hamilton County High School. After the Jim Crow era, Hamilton County High School was integrated, and the site became known as J. R. E. Lee Middle School. The middle school closed down in 2002 to overcrowd Hamilton County High School in order to build a new building outside of Jasper off US 129. The J. R. E. Lee building is now the Hamtilton County Public Schools Administration building.
