Mining disasters: On Tuesday 25th October 1860 the north side of the Benstone Mine was flooded with water from the old workings in the area. Some 50 workers were in the pit at the time. The underground mine was flooded and five miners drowned. Their bodies were never recovered. Most miners were having breakfast at the time otherwise the death toll would have been higher.
