This bridge is named after John Phillip Sousa, also known as "The March King," who was one of the well-known American composers and bandmasters. It carries Pennsylvania Avenue Southeast over Anacostia Drive Southeast, the Anacostia River, M Street Southeast, and the CSX railway. It also passes over the East Bank and West Bank Trails of the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail system. It is a nine span, steel beam bridge with concrete deck constructed from 1938 to 1941 and reconstructed in 1996.
