Vaca Cut is a man-made channel. The tidal currents here can run to 8kts. This is due to the vast amount of water racing through the narrow channel.
The area known as Marathon, FL originally consisted of several keys that were filled in between by the Corps of Engineers. But they found that the water trying to move around Marathon on a falling tide was backing up on the Gulf-side and flooding parts of the island. So, the Corps of Engineers dredged out Vaca Cut to allow the water to flow through.
Vaca Cut has long been notorious as a very dangerous place to dive, snorkel, or swim for the unwary. Over the years, many a tourist has lost their lives here.
