Penelakut Island is named after the First Nation that inhabits it, with about 300 members living on it. The island has an area of 8.66km². A Mediterranean climate of mild winters and warm, dry summers supports a unique ecosystem and an ideal living environment. Penelakut Island is in the rain shadow of Vancouver Island, with an annual rainfall of about 850 mm.

The island was renamed Penelakut Island from Kuper Island in 2010, to honour the peoples of the island.
