During the early years of the 20th Century, Riverside was one of the richest cities in the U.S. due to the value of it's citrus crop. Migrant workers from China settled here to work in the groves, and built a thriving Chinatown here. However, restrictive immigration laws and miscegenation laws limited the population to adult males, who gradually died off. Wong St. roughly in the center of this region of town, is named for the last survivor of the colony, who protected the property until his death. There is a memorial to Chinatown in Ryan Bonamino Park, (Tequesquite Arroyo Park, renamed for a RPD officer killed in the line of duty.)
