Underground Atlanta is a shopping and entertainment district at Five Points in Downtown Atlanta. The buildings were constructed between 1866 and 1871. By 1910, several iron viaducts crossing the railroad tracks had been constructed. In the 1920s, the viaducts were rebuilt in concrete and connected by a linear mall. Street level was raised and the store owners moved their operations to the second floor of their buildings and the original storefronts at the first floor was turned into basements and was later abandoned.
In the mid-1960s, the original storefronts were rediscovered and new restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and music venues were developed from November 1968 to April 1969. It became the center of nightlife in Downtown Atlanta. In the mid-70s, Underground Atlanta became a dangerous area and closed in 1980. In 1987, Underground Atlanta was renovated in a $142,000,000 project by The Rouse Company, and reopened in June 1989. It has since become one of Atlanta's major tourist destinations. Every New Year's Eve, there is a Peach Drop event that occurs in Underground Atlanta.
