The original Hotel Green was located on the eastern side of Raymond Ave., built in 1887. This building was later razed to two stories and sold as business space.
In 1898, the second part of the complex, Castle Green (also known as Central Annex), was constructed by Frederick L. Roehrig for Col. George G. Green. It is a mix of various elements -- Spanish, Victorian, Moorish, and others -- producing what was at the time one of the most original buildings in Pasadena. It was connected to the original hotel by its characteristic enclosed bridge over Raymond Ave., a part of which still survives. It is Pasadena's first fire-proof building, as well as contains the oldest elevator on the West Coast. In 1903, the third and final building, designed by Joel Parkinson, of the Hotel Green complex was added.

Hotel Green quickly became the social center of Pasadena, for resident and visitors alike. At one time, the Valley Hunt Club and Tournament of Roses were based in the hotel.

The novelty of luxurious and elegant resorts soon wore off, and a group of regular hotel visitors decided to purchase the complex. Castle Green was divided in 50 apartments in 1924 and remains so today.

Restoration has been ongoing, with many of the public rooms restored to their 1898 appearance. Original furniture can be found in several of the sitting rooms. Due to its historically-accurate Victorian interiors, it is frequently used for weddings, gatherings, and as a movie location.
