condominium, interesting place
167-foot, 12-story postmodern/Northern Italian palazzo-style residential building originally completed in 1915 as a 4-story stable designed by James S. Maher. The building is clad in dark brown brick, with some decorative brickwork patterns and large windows. The ground floor has large wooden stable doors.
In 2005 the building was bought by famed artist Julian Schnabel, who began an extravagant conversion into a condominium building with eight floors added to the top. The original portion of the building remains basically the same in appearance, and is used by Mr. Schnabel as personal space, including his studio, a parking garage, art gallery space and swimming pool.
The new tower portion was completed in 2007, and is most notable for its bright pink paint scheme, and Venetian-styled arched windows and balconies. The first two stories of the addition are fronted by beige stone balconies with a loggia of arches. The first setback is above this level, where the rest of the tower is painted pink and has various setbacks and window placements.
Schnabel named his new creation Palazzo Chupi. Schnabel says that he built the Palazzo "because I wanted more space, and because I thought I could sell two or three apartments to pay for that space, and I built it because I could."
