Lothal

India / Gujarat / Dholka /
excavation, ghost town, historic ruins, Indus valley civilization

When India was partitioned in 1947, most Indus sites, including Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa, became part of Pakistan. The Archaeological Survey of India undertook a new program of exploration, and excavation. Many sites were discovered across northwestern India. Between 1954 and 1958, more than 50 sites were excavated in the Kutch and Saurashtra peninsulas in Gujarat State, extending the limits of Harappan civilization by 500 kilometers to the river Kim, where the Bhagatrav site accesses the valley of the rivers Narmada and Tapti. Lothal stands 270 kilometers from Mohenjo-Daro, which is in Sindh.

Lothal is the name of an ancient mound situated in the revenue jurisdiction of Saragwala Village in Dholka Taluka of Ahmedabad District in Gujarat State. The word 'Lothal' meaning 'place of the dead' in Gujarati language is said to have been formed by combining the words Loth and thal (sthal). Lothal is essentially a single culture site. The Harappan Culture in all its variant forms is well represented here.

The Harappans were attracted to Lothal not only by its sheltered harbour with a rich cotton and rice-growing hinterland but also by its bead-making industry.

  • A historical relic of the years and glorious times gone by. Place famous for bead manufacturing in the Harrappan Mohenjodaro times. Do not miss the white necklace displayed in the show case. A total piece or art.
  • Why Mound of Dead? As everyone was dead one fine morning! No clue how!
  • The place (Lothal) has a nice museum. Too bad, the government does not allow taking pictures. Doesn't it kind of put a dampener on publicizing the place?
