Cold War 1947-1991, tropospheric scatter station, closed / former military, early warning radar
Operational from 1953 through 1968, Cartwright was a major General Surveillance and Ground-Control Intercept (GCI) station operated by the USAF Air Defense Command as part of the Pinetree Line. Manned by the 922nd Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron the station was the southernmost of seven Pinetree Line stations along the Labrador coast and as such served as a major communications relay site to the Newfoundland stations via troposcatter links to CFB Gander and CFB Goose Bay, as well as links to the two Gap Filler sites at Spotted Island and Cut Throat Island.
The site shut down in June 1968 and has since been razed.
