St. Florian Parish was established in 1907, as the Archdiocese of Detroit recognized the need for a church to serve the Polish immigrants who came to Hamtramck to work in the automotive factories. As the parish grew, congregants amassed over $500,000 to build a second, grander church, consecrated on 21 October 1928. The area around the church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
