The Gold Lake Bog Natural Research Area was established in 1965 to protect 423 acres of subalpine bog and several species of rare bog plants. There are three small ponds in the protected area, which lies at an elevation ranging from 4800 to 5400 feet above sea level. The area incorporates one of the largest sphagnum bogs in the central Cascades, and hosts two species of sundew plants, as well as bladderwort and rannoch-rush. Beaver have a major impact on maintaining the water level and bog habitat in the Gold Lake Bog.
