  • Fray Sabastian Manrique a Portuguese missionary who in 1625 was stranded as a result of a shipwreck mentions that Hijli in the southern part of the study area was a thriving town in the 17th century that stretched 15 Km along the coast. It possibly witnessed a brief spell of prosperity from 1620 to 1660. Presently only the well-known Mosque the Hijli Masnadi Ala built in 1648-49, survives. Hijli and Khejuri Ghat were important port towns until the devastating cyclone of 1864
