Sri Shyama Charan Nandy was a man who believed in "simple living and high thinking". He always lives a very simple life and never craved for wealth. He used to wear very simple dress and never accepted costly clothes, when gifted. He lost his wife at a tender age and his son was a senior official at the Durgapur Steel Plant. He never wanted to stay at his son's place for a long period. He allowed so many paupers and semi-beggars to stay at his mansions, who were tenants only by name. Many of those so-called tenants used to pay very meager amount and some were really poor who received generous help from Sri Shyama Charan. It's unfortunate that those who received these help in their need didn't co-operate with his descendants. His daughter suffered all her life since her house was not released by that very tenant who received generous help from Sri Shyama Charan Nandy. Later when the building was in a dilapidated condition and had to be demolished, those tenants (who had taken enough money and didn't pay the rent for years) demanded the whereabouts of their lock and key. Within few weeks of this, the daughter of Sri Shyama Charan Nandy died.
Another trespasser, who was installed in the premises by the earlier tenant is still staying without any rent. Sri Shyama Charan's son Sri Ajit Kumar Nandy is also a very broad-minded person who has more concern about the well-being of the illegal trespassers and their family members, than his sovereignty over his premises. In spite of provocations from those trespassers, who at times brought their own masons to try to create structural changes in the premises, Sri Ajit Nandy has been patient. He like his father, believes in simple living. And he is more into music and religion that wasting time arguing with the illegal trespassers, who stay in his premises uninvited.
Very few families can bear this pain. Sri Ajit Nandy has lost his sister and he faces lot of provocation for conflict every day due to these unwelcome occupants in our premises. The general trend is to sell the house to a promoter and go away with the money. But Sri Ajit Nandy didn't bulge. He wants to live with his head high, irrespective of the provocations and pressures.
He is the son of Shyama Charan Nandy, who gave a lot to the needy beggars. Some still do respect his for that. That's not an easy achievement for a man who died almost 24 years ago without being a politician or an artist. Just a common helpful man whom people respected and loved for his simplicity. |
