This exit was originally built to accommodate the extension of Maine Rte. 3 made when the "Third Bridge" was build in the 2000s. IN conjunction with the construction of the new Maine General Medical Center Facility adjacent to this exit, this exit was greatly expanded, accommodating traffic from both east and west of the interstate, which are funneled through a new series of rotaries. This also allowed Maine 3 to be extended to Maine Rtes. 8, 11 and 27 on the north side of Augusta.
