In contrast to the open air design of the other five high schools in the Mount Diablo Unified School District, Northgate is entirely contained within one building, with the exceptions of a english class, and special education buildings located next to the main building. Most classrooms within the building have no windows, except for a few, giving the school a reputation of being "prison-like". One popular rumor is that the building was designed by a architect who designed prisons. Northgate is the only high school in the MDUSD that does not have a on campus pool, causing the Swimming and Water Polo teams to use public pools for practice and games. The school's sports arena was finally completed in 2011, with the addition of Stadium seating, a press box, and lighting. Northgate students excel in academics, sports and music.

The movie "The Principal" was partially filmed here.
