History of Palo Cathedral
Palo Cathedral is also the parish of Our Lord's Transfiguration. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Palo where the present Archbishop Pedro Dean resides. Also in the parish are resident priests Fr. Jose Alfaro and Fr. Felipe Diloy.
The Jesuit Fathers were the founders of the parish. Records show that they came in 1595 and immediately constructed a church. The first was inaugurated in 1598, the forerunner of the present Palo Cathedral of the Transfiguration.
In 1768, when the Jesuits were ordered to leave the Philippines, the Augustinian friars took over the parish. In 1843, the Franciscans succeeded them, until the outbreak of the Philippine revolution against Spain in 1898.
The church was repaired by Fr. Agustin de Consuegra, who built the twin towers in 1859, and continued by Fr. Pantaleon de la Fuente, who finished the twin towers and installed the fa‡ade in 1896 up to March 1900.
The church also housed the first seminary of Palo in 1925. It was proclaimed a cathedral on March 25, 1938, with Msgr. Manuel Mascariñas as the first bishop. It was also used as a hospital by American liberation forces from October 1944 to March 1945.
The parish was made the seat of the Archdiocese in December 1982, with Msgr. Cipriano Urgel as the first archbishop.
