Ancient and medieval Talas (or, in Arabic, Taraz) was located on the territory of the settlement that was later called Awliya Ata and later yet Jambul. This has since been renamed Taraz. The old town was mentioned by Byzantine and Chinese travelers and was located near the site of a famous battle between the Umayyad Caliphate and Tang China in 751. It prospered under the Qarakhanids and in 1210 was again the site of a major battle, this time between the Khwarazmshah and Qarakhan on the one side, and the Qara-Khitay on the other. Under the Mongols, Talas was the seat of a governor and a new suburb called Yangi ("new") developed alongside the original settlement.
