Established in 1882, the Michigan Malleable Iron Works made fine gray castings and specialized in agricultural and railway work. It was one of the enterprises operated by Senator McMillan, whose interests included the railway car maker, American Car and Foundry. In 1898 the company absorbed Anchor Manufacturing, a cooperage and barrel manufacturer, located in Springwells along the then border with Detroit.

Ford Motor Company and Timken-Detroit Axle became the company's leading customers with the advent of the automotive boom. The plant was operational until the early 1950s. It was later acquired by the City for back taxes and was demolished in 1962.
