Etymologically,the name 'KENDUR' has two parts,'kend'/'kendu' and 'ur'(i.e;'kend'/'kendu' +'ur'),which means a "locality or place surrounded by tall and old banian or Ashatthwa like 'kend' or 'kendu' trees".World-famous Bengali writer and linguist,Dr. Sukumar Sen has substiantiated that in his book 'Banglar Sthannam' and such tall old Kendu trees demarcating the last boundaries can still be seen at and around Kendur.According to Wikipedia.com,'Kendur'means 'known place'[('kend'=known)+('ur'=place)]. Kendur is a very old village in the district of Burdwan,traditionally very fertile 'Rarh' part of West Bengal,located at +-30 kms South of Burdwan town(dist h/q) bordering Hooghly and Bankura districts.

The village has a strong cultural link with ancient South India,at least with the Great Chola Dynasty,who conqured Bengal upto the Ganges and named it 'Gangaikondacholapuram' while the greatest Chola king,Rajendra adopted the famous title,'Gangaikondadeva'.The use of the known suffix term 'ur','us' or 'aas'/'as' as developed or developing South Bengal localities as in the names of 'Belur','Singur',as here 'Kendur' or the well-known and developed northern Burdwan village,'Dhamas' or 'Indas ' of Bankura distt.bears clears testimony of the Chola Cultural footprints.Similar names can easily and still be found in some South Indian states,like Maharashtra,Karnataka,Andhra or Tamilnadu(as in case of 'Belur' in Karnataka and 'Kendur' in Maharashtra).Also surnames or titles,like 'Kendurkar'(a version of 'Kulkarni') and names of worshipped godesses,like 'Kendrai Devi' are also available.

Astonishingly,Chalukya King,Vikramaditya II's Kendur Inscription of 749 A.D. mentions a place called 'KENDUR' in Burdwan region,though it has no further clarification.This is the earliest historical,though oblique,reference of a place called 'Kendur' in Bengal(see 'Kendur,Burdwan in Kendur Inscription,749 AD' in Google).

Again from another point of view,use of concluding phonemes,/ra/,/da/(as in /Tamilnadu/)or /rha/ are very frequent and popular in 'Rarh Bengal' villages.Famous local writer,activist ang linguist,late Sudhir Chandra Dan of neighbouring Muidhara village first astonishingly discovered that almost all the names of nearby old local villages,apart from his own ancestral village,bear such phonemes in their names as in cases of 'Rautara',Shardanga','Makarkona','Kendur','Amraichandi'('Amra' in short),'Baura','Chhatrakhanda'(or locally 'Chhatarkhanda'),'Kenjera','Doargram,'Gopalbera' or some other known villages of the area like,'belar'(or local 'Beral'),'Koior','Guir','Narugram','Raina','Rainagar','Bokra','Gunar','Mugura','Meral','Memari','Guskara' and many more like.The surname which came from the royal title 'Ray' or 'Roy'(frequent in Kendur area) as in the name of greatest Vijayanagar king,Krishna Devray is also a strong South Indian link Again,the Sens and Palas also came largely from South.Kendur has such surnames/titles in form either of its inhabitants or of relatives.
There is also a link to medieval Agra,as the local 'Ugra Kshatriyas' are obliquely known to come to this place from Agra after the Muslim invaders,especially Chengiz and Taimur started massacre in and around Delhi and Agra to wipe out the Hindu Kshatriya or Rajput rulers.As a result,a lot of Kshatriyas fled from Agra to Bengal to survive and gradually settled there.Those who came from Agra-area are generally known to be 'Agri' or colloquially,'Aguri'.

Village 'Kendur' was thus continuous in last 1000(one thousand)-odd years.The puja of Dharmaraj,as per Dharmamangal tradition,Teraqota Damodar temple of the medieval Hindu Malla Kings of nearby Mallabhum(Bankura-Bishnupur-Purulia),old decorated 'dalan','durgamandirs'(Roy families),'Shivmandirs' and 'natmandir' of the Malla's 'Rashlila' tradition,history of Mughal title 'Sahana' from Aurangzeb to local feudal lords for their hospitality to the Emperor's local army and last but not the least,Britist educational establishment much before 1857 at the village's frontside,history of freedom-fighting,nationalist Congress politics,CPM & Left-Front Govt.,the Panchayets and present times of political change due to TMC-INC co-alition are nothing but a line of continuity. Now,the village has a permanent Population of 5000 (approx.),having 3(three)Govt.regd.polling stations.

It has two primary schools, one High school and an equipped rural library.Govt.backed and other INGOs-backed NGO,C.E.F. turned 'CONSOCEF'(all-India regn.no.S/1L:40540 of 2006-07),Kendur Sabuj Sangha,Nandanik,Milan Sangha & Kendur Siksha Sangha clubs arrange many educational,social and cultural activities.

Since 2oo1,an all-inclusive 21st century-modern Govt.s and other INGOs-backed broadest-level fixed agenda-wise fully politically-neutral truly social welfare N.G.O.,Cultural and Educational Forum turned Conscious Soul Cultural Educational Forum (All-India regn.no.S/1L:40540 of 2006-07) started activities there with its main branch at Ayodhya-Kashipur village of Haripal P.S. of Singur and Tarakeshwar-famous Hooghly district and other branches allover and outside West Bengal under the most sincere and never-say-die leadership of R.K.Mission & C.U.alumnus Subhajit Dutta,who is an international student delegate,national administrative volunteer and 2nd attempt delhi-cadre IAS examinee.The ngo and its lead members were very much politically disturbed and harrashed from 2006 to 2oo9 general election for their unique,peaceful but strict politically neutral mission,opinions,principles and respective open and all-inclusive activities.But,its activities have been restarted there after the results of 2009 general elections.The ngo has 10000+ total communication points(incl.basic and ever increasing activities points)all over the world.RKM,RedCross,Rabindra Parishad,Lions and Rotary Clubs,Missionaries of Charities,UN,US,UK,EU and allied foreign offices in India are directly and indirectly involved,apart from state and central govt.s and several top civil servants,social activities,spiritual,cultural,media,top constitutional figures accross party lines are associated with it.

It is recently in national and international watch for alleged and documented highest-level national and human rights violations by kocal cpm & a section of burdwan police of all-India young genius,Subhajit Dutta,who originally belongs to this village.West Bengal Chief Secretary,Ashoke Mohan Chakraborty(IAS)himself is investagiting the said matter under the direction of Rashtrapati Bhawan and Union Home Ministry(letter no.11-034/3/CSR-2009,dt.7/10/2009).Actually Subhajit,who is an NSS,requested Her Excellency,Mrs.Pratibha Devi Singh Patil,Hon'ble President of India with documented details to immediadely impose art.356 of The Constitution of India in the State of West Bengal as the district administration of Burdwan,the largest district of West Bengal failed to take impromptu and apt action against an unholy nexs of local illegal CPM politicians and a questionable section of dist.police,who in 2006 uncannily,anti-nationally and of course unsuccessfully tried to stop Subhajit Dutta led NGO's mass INDEPENDENCE DAY celebration,reminding people of the then upcoming 60 yrs. of India's hard and blood-earned independence.Perhaps,the others feared of loud,continuous and vibrant 'Vandemataram' and 'Jai Hind' slogans of the public procession,led by genius Dutta & his open and legal Govt.backed-NGO.Also that police-politics nexux which includes not less than 2(two) IPS,tried their best to taint Subhajit Dutta,his NGO,his career and life for ever by falsely stamping him with 'Maoist'/'Naxalite' or 'Associate' tag and to imprison him,through secret DIB enquiry report and following 2(two)weeks' fundamental & human rights-encroaching surveilllence,while he was doing nothing but peacefully and decently leading an I-Day procession and prpogrammes in some remotest and not-so-known part of MOTHERINDIA herself.Subhajit had also due and documented official acknowledgements of the said programme from the top echelons of Burdwan dist.administration through meetings,official letters upto 14/8/2006 evening including those from DM & SP Offices.

Yet,the then Addl.SP of Burdwan ordered a secret enquiry about Subhajit and his whereabouts crossing administrative hierarchy,only being obedient to local CPM,thereby throwing away the national constitution that too during national programme.WHERE ARE WE LIVING!Again,when present DM ordered enquiry and forwarded the matter to present SP,R.Rajshekharan(IPS) for thorough enquiry,he cared his boss a fig!Also,the present DIB chief of Burdwan too had documented info and request to take immediate action!THEN WHAT WERE THE DUO DOING?!NOW ALL ARE UNDER THE PRESIDENT OF INDIA'S FIRE.SO,THE PRESENT INFAMOUS KENDUR-FILE MUST BE FOLLOWED.

So, the name itself indicates that the village is situated in the lap of nature,MOTHER EARTH with all its scenic beauty and abundance of flowers,fruits,vegetables,fishes,floras and faunas.If one visits it at any time,he will definitely be shoothed.A lunch of rice,card,rasagollas and curry of local fishes caught by village's Nitai Hari,Bipul,Subhash,Becha or Prabhat Das and rural vegetables produced by Nanda Das will be immemorable.

The village is generally Varna-Hindu village with hundreds of other pujas and rituals like, Charak,Mahashivaratri,Annapurna puja,Brahma puja,Laxmi,Saraswati,Kartik,Bishwakarma,Manasa and Ganesh Pujas and Chabbis Pahar.Weekly and annual Dharmaraj Puja on Sridurgadashami attracts huge Hindu attention even from distant places.Though the village is Hindu,it got a sudden and temporary secular blend by one-decade's presence of now-dead mason Egral Mistry and Family.

Very recent positive things about the village are presence of cable tv,almost all pvt.companies's and BSNL's mobile network coverege,computer & ITI training course in school,presence of pvt.computers and internet and smooth flow of motor vehicles.
