The rest area is named for Molly Pitcher, the hero of the Battle of Monmouth in 1778. Though many historians disagree whether the story is fact or folklore, Molly Pitcher supposedly followed her husband into battle, fetched water for the Continental soldiers and joined an artillery battery after her husband fell in battle. Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley, wife of William Hays, was given enough credence to her claim that the Pennsylvania legislature granted her a pension. She is buried in Carlisle, Pennsylvania near a statue bearing the name of Molly Pitcher.
