The present building replaced the original which was built for Royal Dutch Shell in the 1930s but served as the headquarters of the Gestapo during the World War II Nazi occupation of Denmark. It was destroyed in a landmark bombing attack by the Royal Air Force which aimed at throwing the bombs horizontally, destroying the building except for the top floor where resistance fighters were held before interrogation, allowing them to flee over the neighbouring roofs,
