It is believed to have been established originally as an unconsecrated graveyard for the prostitutes known locally as the Winchester Geese. The women got this name because they were licensed by the Bishop of Winchester, who owned the surrounding land, rather than the City of London or Surrey authorities. The bodies of 15,000 paupers, prostitutes, children under the age of five, and fetuses are believed to have been buried there since late medieval times. An organisation of Friends of Cross Bones had been set up to preserve the graveyard.
