Hellenistic Halos

The original town of Halos was founded by the coast in the Archaic Period, by the 9th century BC. It was mentioned by Herodotos as naval base for one of the Greek expeditions against the Persian invaders in the summer of 480 BC, but in 346 BC it was sacked by the Macedonian general Parmenion. In 302 BC the town was refounded on the site of a Macedonian military camp at the foot of the hill to the southwest by permission of Demetrios Poliorketes. This was the site of the Hellenistic town, which declined, possibly as a result of an earthquake, in Late Antiquity. During the Byzantine Period, a fortress and settlement survived on the hill above, which had probably served as the acropolis of the Hellenistic city.
