Built in 1912, it was the home of Dr. and Mrs. Otto Scherer. In 1930, their son, Robert, invented the machine that led to the founding of the R.P. Scherer Corporation, the world's leading producer of soft gelatin capsules.

In recent years, the building housed the Children's Museum of Detroit. When the museum found a new home, the house was vacant for a number of years. As of April 2013 the house has become the home of the Hellenic Museum of Michigan, chronicling the achievements of Greek-Americans.
