If you try to drive from Velizh to Zapodne Dvina via various unpaved roads Zharkovski is the first place you come to where there is pavement and any commercial activity to speak of. There is a railroad track and from what I could see some sort of local passenger train, probably going to Zapodne Dvina. From here, the road is good. Scenery in this area is very nice -- typical Russian woodland with lots of birch trees.
